Renowned since classical times for its marble quarries, where sculptors throughout the ages, Michelangelo included, have come to choose their material. One of its most ancient caves may still be visited nowadays. It takes its nickname, “FANTI SCRITTI” (literally, “written children”), from the children depicted on its walls. It is still a flourishing town in the Gothic style, its main industry being marble working.
